49th Parallel Geology
The sedimentary Proterozoic Successions of Waterton and Glacier National Parks
Four-day option
Waterton National Park on the Canadian side of the border and Glacier National Park south on the American side of the 49th parallel border afford spectacular geological exposures of the thick sedimentary successions of the Proterozoic Belt-Purcell Supergroups.
Starting and ending in Calgary.
Five-/six- day options
Option 1 - Yellowstone
Travel further to the Yellowstone complex. Of interest as a terrestrial “hot spot”, a potential “super-volcano” and likely the world’s most scenic geothermal area.
Starting and ending either in Calgary or in Helena, Montana.
Option 2 - The Grand Canyon
Travel instead to the Grand Canyon with its layer-cake stratigraphy and incredible history and scenery. Opportunities available for short hikes into the canyon.
Starting and ending in either Phoenix or Flagstaff, Arizona.

Pu’u O’o Volcano, Hawaii
The field trip would examine Pu’u O’o’s volcanic activity as well as other aspects of volcanism on the “Big Island” with potential for other island excursions.
Excursion would last five to seven days.
Starting and ending in Honolulu or Hilo.

Appalachian Orogeny
Trans-border excursion that would run across the American-Canadian border.
Excursion would last five days.
Likely starting and ending in Montreal.
